Action 55 in Malta flag Malta

Member States to double annual public spending on ICT research and development

Indicator Status Evidence
Have your ICT R&D expenditure risen by 10% or more per annum in public spending in last 3 available years? - A precise measurement of total government funding of Information Communication Technology (ICT) Research and Development (R&D) is a complex and difficult task because the current methodological framework for collecting data for funding and performing R&D does not allow calculating directly or in full detail the ICT R&D. The statistical challenges with the measurement of ICT R&D are related to the scope of measurement, type of measurement and classifications to be used.
Is ICT R&D a dedicated area in your Research and Development programme (either as a separate programme or a part of general R&D programme)? Yes Yes, ICT has been a dedicated area in Malta’s Research and Innovation (R&I) Programme since the 2008 call (as part of a general programme focusing on all four priority areas identified in the national R&I Strategy). http://www.mcst.gov.mt/national-funding/ri-programme/previous-ri-programmes

Are there targeted allocations of Structural Funds on ICT R&D? Yes There is a specific allocation to ICT and R&D under Structural funds. Taking into account priority themes (pg 99 of Operational Programme I) 1, 2 , 3, 4, 7, 9, 3 and15 this would bring the total public eligible allocated to ICT and R&D to €109,475,442. This excludes other initiatives financed through OPII such as European Social Fund 1.40. the exclusion is being made because there is no specific allocation to Information and Communication Technologies ICT and R&D but project that address such areas.
