In 2012, the penetration rate of fixed broadband is 17.8% of the population below the EU average of 27.7%. Slovakia is in the group of countries with the lowest penetration levels. Slovakia has 29.1% of fixed lines providing speeds of 10 Mbps and above. With regards to high and ultra fast speeds, only 15.2% of lines provide speeds between 30Mbps and below 100Mbps and 1.9% of fixed lines provide speeds equal or above 100 Mbps. Most of broadband lines in Slovakia are in the speed range of 2 Mbps and below 10 Mbps (60.3%). Mobile broadband penetration is 32.3%.
In 2011 72% of the population use the internet regularly above the EU average of 68%. With regards to disadvantaged people, the rate was 51%. 20% of citizens have never used the internet. Take-up of eCommerce is below average, with 37% of the population buying online. The take-up of eGovernment among citizens decreased slightly in 2011 to 48%. Percentage of businesses using online public services increased to 96%. In 2009, business expenditure on R&D (BERD) in the ICT sectors amounted to 2.6 mio €. The share of ICT in total BERD is the lowest in the EU, at below 5%.
